Hope is a wonderful glider who was rescued by the neighbor of a breeder in Irving Texas. She was found malnourished and injured in the woman's backyard. Her tail was missing, and either she'd been thrown out or had escaped. Hope was so tiny, that we didn't realize she was pregnant. In fact, she hid the joeys from us for a long time to protect them.

Hope had surgery to amputate what was left of her tail on July 7th, but she self mutilated, ripping out her incision area and all her stitches. After surgery to repair the damage she did to herself, she went to stay with Charlie and Mary of Glider Tree and recover.

In October 2004, Hope came home to live with us. She is living a pampered life in sanctuary with her twins, Love and Faith, and cagemate, Chase.

She is such a sweet girl, and doing so wonderful!  Hope wants you to know what to do to help other gliders in need, how to spot a bad breeder and more.

Update on George

If you haven’t met George you haven’t met one of the most inspiring gliders around! This little boy came to Hope for Gliders one year ago on March 5th, along with his cagemate, Gracie. He couldn’t stand or walk (he had HLP), had a broken leg that had healed badly, was blind and scarred and had stained, spotty fur. We weren’t sure if George would live though his first weekend here. It was very clear that he had suffered years of neglect and abuse.

This video is from George's third day with us:

We began giving George sub-Q calcium every 12 hours to treat the HLP, and this continued for some time, he was offered high calcium foods and given lots of TLC. He responded almost immediately and showed signs of improvement. Within a week his weight had increased from 94 to 102 and his grip was a little stronger. I was hand feeding George every 2 hours at that time. He craved attention and he did not want me to put him in his cage.

It has been a long road but George has had a remarkable recovery. He gets around fairly well wants to explore his surroundings as well as the world. He really enjoys meeting new people and doesn’t know a stranger. He has a very high sense of smell and also hearing. He runs in his wheel each morning and he follows his cage mate Gracie around in the cage.

He still wants to be with me all the time, still loves his meal worms and still scares me by propelling himself to the front of the cage at times. I do some stretching exercises with George daily and this had really seamed to help him.

I want to thank some special people who are George’s donors, Charla, Kevin and Stephanie H. Your kindness means so much to the gliders and to us! Thank you again for being glider angels!

I can’t believe he has been here a year already, time has gone by quickly. I am still amazed and inspired by George each day and I hope you will be inspired by him also.
