Hope for Gliders members have:

Assisted in the rescue and care of nearly 300 sugar gliders.

Placed over 140 sugar gliders in screened forever homes

Talked with over 400 people about proper sugar glider care.

Sponsored neutering of almost 100 rescued male sugar gliders

Assisted in state rail and multi state railroads to help transport sugar gliders to our program and a safe haven.

Taken legal action against a breeder with abusive practices.

Many of our group members post on several different online sugar glider message boards. Members often stay up long hours helping others online or on the phone answering questions or assisting those whose gliders are ill.

Hope for Gliders is a Dallas-Fort Worth based education and rescue resource with 501C application pending. Our work includes the following:

Saving Sugar Gliders through Rescue and Sheltering
We provide a safe haven for gliders that are healthy and emotionally well adjusted until a new forever home can be found. All family units remain intact and we don't separate bonded groups. Males are neutered before placement in a new home. All new owners are screened and must agree to an adoption agreement in order to adopt. No sugar glider is put to sleep to make more room for new gliders.

Sugar Glider Sanctuary
Hope for Gliders provides sanctuary to gliders that are unable to be placed in new homes due to health or behavior issues. These gliders receive love and care for the rest of their lives. We strive to reduce the stresses these gliders are exposed to by having a single caregiver who handles that glider and its family if it has one. We determine which sugar gliders will remain in a sanctuary setting by using the Higdon Sugar Glider Behavior Scale.

Education
Hope for Gliders has monthly meet ups for potential, new or older owners who wish to learn more about sugar gliders in all areas of care, from diet to how to find a vet experienced in gliders. Hope for Gliders makes trips to the public sector for education at schools, flea markets, home and pet shows and more. Hope for Glider members stress the responsibility of pet ownership, along with the commitment they require from owners. Hope for Glides believes that animals should not be bought on impulse, but that owners do their research before bringing a pet into the home. Hope for Gliders encourages the neutering of male gliders to help reduce the growing number of sugar glider rescues that are in our community as well as nationwide. By working together we can do so much more to help gliders and their owners succeed.

Consulting for Pet Stores or hobby breeders that sell sugar gliders
Hope for Gliders is aware that some pet stores and hobby breeders sell sugar gliders. It is our hope that proper information is given to new pet owners and that sugar gliders are housed in appropriate conditions and receive a proven diet. Hope for Gliders will, with the cooperation of the pet store owner/hobby breeder, work with them to make sure the conditions and standards they give their sugar gliders is the best possible. Owners who are given accurate information on sugar glider care have a lower rescue rate than owners who haven't, and that happy customers are repeat customers. We also promote the neutering of male sugar gliders to shop owners/hobby breeders. One of the main reasons for people giving up their male gliders is the odor the males can have from marking. With neutering this is almost eliminated in most males.
